Make City Hall Stand Up For Palestine

War Crimes Against Palestine

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights says there is evidence that Israel’s attacks on Gaza constitute war crimes. These attacks have killed thousands of Palestinians, most of them civilians and many of them children.

A Bad Resolution

Nevertheless, on October 11, the Dallas City Council adopted a resolution saying the city “stands with Israel in its fight against Hamas”. This so-called fight against Hamas is in fact the leveling of the Gaza Strip, an area where more than two million Palestinians live. Israel has called for Palestinians to completely abandon the northern part of the strip, a demand which the Red Cross has called “a death sentence.” The removal of a million Palestinians from the northern Gaza Strip would be an act of ethnic cleansing. Ethnic cleansing is a crime against humanity.

Public Views

The resolution passed the city council in spite of about 75% of commentators opposing it. In response to that pressure, Mayor Eric Johnson claimed he was willing to entertain a resolution that addressed the concerns of the Palestinian community.

A Drop of Balance

Together with Palestinian allies, we are now drafting a proposed resolution for the Dallas City Council. We have no hope that the Dallas City Council will come to a realistic understanding of the conflict in Palestine, which obviously did not start on October 7. However, we do insist that they recognize the human rights of Palestinians and condemn the atrocities which Israel, with US assistance, is now perpetrating against them. The resolution will call for an end to the incredible violence now being conducted against Gaza as well as the lifting of the murderous siege of Gaza.
